Hi G,

We loved this posting. You answered all of the questons I was hoping to ask you, with no request. Thank you.

It was great seeing you at the retreat. I could see with my own eyes what a rich experience this has been for you.

I tried to forward you an article today from the NY Times. I sent it to Gabriel.rogers@gmail.com. I thought I had your address, but couldn't find it. Can you confirm?

Love,
Barbara

I admire your writing style. There is so much detail and descriptions that bring this life closer to me.
I hope you talk about the methods of farming especially dealing with harvesting and storage for my benefit. I am learning how to harvest corn without tractor equipment (for lack of dollars).
Hugh gave me this blog address.

Gabe,

The time spirit of the USA will not leave you behind. More and more I feel that what is essential and more fulfilling and helpful for ourselves and those around us is to be fully present, not necessarily to know what the latest Right or Left News spinner is bashing on about....but hey, if that is your cup of tea then heave ho! Anchors up! I just giggle at the fact that you are in such a new and different place, and THEY have their own political and social scene going on, that perhaps it may be good to hunker down into IT, and get a new feel for a new way, a different path, one less travelled.

That chicken next to you on the bus has just as much wisdom and up-to-date-ness as our BIG TV's! It is just in a different land, and people here would say "A chicken on a bus? That's gross...what if it poops!" What I mean to say is this: US ethnocentricity has its drawbacks, and as we have seen from the past, the political system here is certainly flawed...so what if you get the election results a few hours later than everyone else...will that change your space in El Salvador? Your duty for the Peace Corps? "Think not of what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." said the founder of your current mission...Bring that awareness to the place you are in...bring that 'What can I do to help' to your present situation.....I think now, "Why am I telling him this? He already understands this!!!" Keep on with the good work Gabe.

I'll be living in Cochabamba, Bolivia, next semester from Septmeber to December. I don't know if it will ever occur that we could meet but I would love it if that was possible.

Soak it up my friend! The Zeitgeist is out of our hands, and the land is just below our feet. Bienvenidos.

I'm assuming HCN means Host Country National. Lieutenant Luna wasn't exactly working for them; I think the U.S. Army's civil affairs policy probably dictates that when possible they should be accompanied by a member of the HC's military or police. The civil affairs guys just said they had to bring someone along, and asked the Salvadoran colonel to give them someone. They expected a private, but they got an experienced Lieutenant who'd been in the army for many years but didn't know anything about the local area because he's stationed halfway across the country. I think he was there just for a short training or something. So when we had questions about directions he had no idea, which irked the civil affairs guys. And amused me.
